We are a working urban farm that models, promotes and educates about sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development and access to good food for all.

Livestock on the Farm


Keeping livestock at Zenger Farm is a community endeavor. Visiting youth help to move the chickens from one field to another, the Bee Group tends to bee needs, and beginning farmers tend a flock of turkeys from young poults until they are full-grown at Thanksgiving. By creating direct opportunities for shared ownership of farm livestock, Zenger Farm aims to increase educational opportunities and diversify farm income. 

 

 

Zenger Farm Egg Cooperative

A diverse flock of laying hens is tended by the Zenger Farm Egg Cooperative, a group of community members who share in the care of the flock and the bounty of the eggs.

Community Bee Project

The honey bee hives at Zenger Farm are managed by a committee of Portland Urban Beekeepers (PUB). The PUB Zenger committee hosts work parties a couple times a month to care for the hives at the farm. Volunteer “worker bees” are invited to join the work parties and learn about beekeeping.

Community Worm Project

Members of this group care for our red wiggler worms and promote worm composting in the community, including teaching worm composting workshops. Thanksgiving Turkeys

Zenger Farm's flock of turkeys spends their days grazing on bugs and enjoying the bounty of leftover produce from the fields. These talkative and social birds play an integral role in educating youth and adult visitors about the process of growing food, from field to fork.
